Important information for paragliders on the Schmitten

Want to soar high and glide for extended periods? The exceptional thermals in Zell am See-Kaprun lend themselves remarkably to this experience. The prime time for thermal and cross-country flights is from April to August. However, paragliding is possible from as early as February, allowing you to glide across the snowy Pinzgau region in winter.

What makes the thermals on the Schmittenhöhe so unique? It’s the strong updrafts originating from the southeast basin. As a result, you can get an early start – in almost all cross-regional wind directions.

There are three launch sites on the Schmitten: You can take to the skies either from the summit, just shy of 2,000 meters, from the trassXpress/Areitbahn III mountain station or from the Schmittenhöhebahn mountain station. Important: Please heed the no-launch zone! The expansive meadow areas encircling the summit are perfect for laying out your glider, providing an excellent tranquil environment to prepare for take-off.

There are also several landing options, for instance, the meadow at the Fürth-Kaprun railway crossing or the Piesendorf landing site. You can return to the cable car valley station via carpooling, by bus or with the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn train.
