Art and lakes combined into one great hiking experience

Lake Zell and three reservoir ponds – each of them telling a fascinating story, impressive works of art and physical activity: The 4 Lakes Art Hike on the Schmitten is the perfect blend of nature, culture and exercise for your summer holiday. Sporty or leisurely, pastures or water, hiking boots or bikini: Zell am See quickly turns an “or” into an “and” on the Schmittenhöhe!

One hike – four lakes

Discover four interesting bodies of water during just one hike on Zell’s landmark mountain. The 4 Lakes Art Hike on the Schmittenhöhe is jam-packed with wonderful experiences. The following four highlights are only the beginning:

  • Hirschkogel reservoir pond: The “Lake of Tranquillity” is also the highest lake up on the Schmitten.
  • Brunnermais reservoir pond: The “Lake of Art” carries its title with pride and with good reason – as the many works of art from the “Art on the Mountain” symposia prove.
  • Plettsaukopf reservoir pond: The “Lake for Families” is the biggest of the reservoir ponds and boasts a water playground, a play ship, a sand box and lots of seating options.
  • Water reservoir for artificial snowmaking: At the foot of the Schmittenhöhe, Lake Zell is both the “Lake of Boat Tours” and the biggest water reservoir for artificial snowmaking.

“Art on the Mountain” along the hiking trail

Art follows you wherever you go on the Schmittenhöhe – at least, during the 4 Lakes Art Hike and around Brunnermais reservoir pond. During a total of six art symposia, more than 30 artistic masterpieces were created in Zell am See since 1995. Each of them manages to establish a unique connection between nature and culture. Curious now? Let's go then! Who knows how many works of art you’ll discover during your hiking adventure …

By the way: The Schmitten received the title of Austria’s first “art and culture mountain” in 2014 and has truly lived up to it ever since!
